Michelle Bridges' candid admission on being a single mum

<p>Michelle Bridges has spoken candidly about the challenges of being a single parent to her seven-year-old son Axel. </p> <p>The former <em>Biggest Loser</em> trainer described her son, who she shared with ex-partner and fellow celebrity trainer Steve Willis, as a "confident" little boy. </p> <p>While Bridges was doing radio interviews about a new project, Axel joined in on the fun. </p> <p>The 52-year-old told <a href="https://honey.nine.com.au/parenting/michelle-bridges-single-mum-son-axel-health-and-fitness/2ae072f9-e38c-46ff-b4ba-6e08c99bd33e" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>9Honey</em></a>, "He's just like a little man now, we have good conversations and he's got a really good sense of humour." </p> <p>"He went into that radio station this morning, just jumped on the microphone, started singing and was answering the phone."</p> <p>Bridges said she has purposefully organised her everyday life to be present in her young son's life. </p> <p>"I've kind of engineered my life this way to be able to take him to school and pick him up pretty much every single day," she says.</p> <p>She went on to say her and Axel are "two peas in a pod", while admitting it has been difficult to raise Axel as a single parent. </p> <p>"We're a team and we're very close, extremely close. And yes, it can be challenging and you do need to sometimes rely on other people to help you out," she explains.</p> <p>"I don't have family in Sydney but I have basically my best friend who's like my brother, and they are super tight."</p> <p>"It does take a bit of a village if you've got one great if you haven't you sometimes need to really find it."</p> <p><em>Image credits: Instagram </em></p>

Promising Alzheimer’s drug offers hope for a bright future in treatment

<p>A remarkable and significant breakthrough in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease is ushering in a new era of hope and possibilities for patients grappling with early onset dementia.</p> <p>Scientists and researchers are celebrating this groundbreaking development, viewing it as a tremendous opportunity to transform the landscape of Alzheimer's treatment.</p> <p>The drug in question, donanemab, developed by Eli Lilly, has shown remarkable success in clinical trials and is anticipated to receive approval from the Food and Drug Administration later this year, according to a report in the <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/07/17/alzheimers-drug-donanemab-lowers-risk-of-dementia/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>New York Post</em></a>.</p> <p>Individuals who participated in the donanemab trials experienced a remarkable 40% reduction in the risk of transitioning from mild cognitive impairment to mild or moderate dementia. This is an extraordinary advancement that brings renewed optimism to those affected by this devastating condition.</p> <p>Donanemab would be the third Alzheimer’s drug to emerge in recent months, following the introduction of Leqembi and Aduhelm. This is just the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the realm of molecular therapies for Alzheimer's, as expressed by Dr. Gil Rabinovici, director of the University of California San Francisco’s Memory and Ageing Centre, in an editorial for <em>JAMA</em>.</p> <p>Dr. Daniel Skovronsky, the chief scientific and medical officer at Lilly, has emphasised the significance of this breakthrough. He states, "This will be a very important and meaningful drug," as quoted in <em>Fierce Biotech</em>. Skovronsky further adds, "[T]here’s a huge opportunity here for patients." Such resolute optimism is inspiring, reflecting the tremendous potential this drug holds for transforming lives.</p> <p>Similar to Leqembi and Aduhelm, donanemab is a monoclonal antibody designed to target plaque in the brain, specifically the amyloid protein. These amyloid plaques are responsible for the propagation of another protein called tau, which contributes to the development of Alzheimer's disease.</p> <p>Notably, the donanemab trial also revealed that the drug slowed cognitive decline by an impressive 35% compared to a placebo in individuals with low to intermediate levels of tau protein in the brain. In fact, donanemab demonstrated superior efficacy in clearing amyloid plaques when compared to Aduhelm and Leqembi.</p> <p>Moreover, unlike Leqembi, which necessitates long-term usage, patients taking donanemab may follow a fixed-duration dosing schedule, potentially allowing some individuals to discontinue the treatment after a certain period. "I expect that many patients will be able to stop dosing even as soon as 12 months," Skovronsky affirmed. This stands as a significant departure from being prescribed a lifelong medication, providing an exciting and meaningful prospect for patients.</p> <p>While it is important to note that these new Alzheimer’s drugs do carry limitations and risks, medical experts remain cautiously optimistic. Donanemab, along with the other emerging drugs, has been associated with brain swelling and bleeding. Tragically, three individuals in the donanemab clinical trial lost their lives due to these side effects.</p> <p>The risk of brain swelling and bleeding is heightened among those carrying the APOE4 gene, which is associated with an increased susceptibility to Alzheimer’s. Furthermore, individuals with more advanced stages of the disease showed minimal to no benefit compared to those who received a placebo.</p> <p>As a result, it is possible that donanemab will be recommended primarily for individuals with low to intermediate levels of tau proteins, indicating milder forms of the disease.</p> <p>Nevertheless, Skovronsky and other medical experts maintain their optimism regarding the FDA's approval, expressing the urgent need for it to come to fruition. Skovronsky highlights, "Every day that goes by, there are some patients who pass through this early stage of Alzheimer’s disease and become more advanced, and they won’t benefit from treatment. That’s a very pressing sense of urgency."</p> <p>While challenges and risks remain, the emergence of donanemab and its potential approval by the FDA represents a beacon of hope for the millions of individuals and families affected by Alzheimer's disease. Olympic icon shares pics of new baby with unusual name

And I’ll be really honest and say, I was somewhat nervous coming here today to see you, because I would genuinely say that the show <em>The Biggest Loser</em> was one of the most traumatic things that ever happened to me,” Helene-Horton replied.</p> <p>“Yeah, I hear you. I absolutely hear you. Going on a show like that back in the day, I really had to dig deep and question my morals about why I’m in the health and fitness industry,” responded Bridges.</p> <p>Helene-Horton said that, having spoken to Bridges, she’d soon realised they had some things in common. </p> <p>“You, like me, are somebody who struggled against the idea that you need to be perfect. But the edit [on <em>The Biggest Loser</em>] still made me feel like someone who had the same values as you … would make me feel shame.”</p> <p>Bridges went on to admit that <em>The Biggest Loser</em> wouldn't "work" today, due to the liberation of the body positivity movement and the change in definition of what it means to be healthy. </p> <p>“When I look back on it, 17 years ago, it was a totally a different culture back then. I don’t think that show would work today. <p>Fitness guru Michelle Bridges has put her Southern Highlands 10-acre oasis back on the market after it previously <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/property/real-estate/real-estate-s-biggest-loser-michelle-bridges-fails-to-sell-home" target="_blank" rel="noopener">failed to secure a buyer</a>.</p> <p>Bridges put the five-bedroom, three-bathroom home at 1840 Kandaloon Road, Kangaloon, NSW, on the market with a new agency and price guide.</p> <p>The property was originally listed by Ben Olofsen of The Agency Southern Highlands with an auction guide of $6.5 million. It has since been listed by Gene Fairbanks and Kathryn Pogson-Pike of Ray White Bowral, with a price guide of $4.6 million to $4.8 million.</p> <p>An auction date for the property is yet to be published.</p> <p>The property is described as a "picturesque acreage haven” on the listing. Bridges had previously shared the original listing on her Instagram page.</p> <p>The 10-acre oasis is set on an elevated position allowing for undisturbed views of the region’s rolling hills and has two living rooms and multiple entertaining options.</p> <p>The home includes a terrace, outdoor pool, tennis court and pavilion, which will suit buyers planning to entertain guests.</p> <p>There is also accommodation located above the garage.</p> <p>Expansive windows make for a stunning view of Kangaloon, a village in the Southern Highlands in the Wingecarribee Shire.</p> <p>Kangaloon has a population of just 162, making it ideal for those who wish to steer clear of the hustle and bustle of the city.</p> <p>The fitness fanatic has become a household name with her multiple appearances on TV, a clothing line and fitness program 12WBT. Real estate’s ‘Biggest Loser’ Michelle Bridges fails to sell home

<p dir="ltr">Fitness entrepreneur Michelle Bridges has failed to sell her $6.5m Kangaloon home, amid plans to go back to Sydney.</p> <p dir="ltr">The former <em>Biggest Loser</em> trainer initially bought the five-bedroom home in 2017 for $2.7m for her family when she outbid chef Luke Mangan.</p> <p dir="ltr">The 4.1 hectare estate was listed last month with initial reports suggesting that the home should be sold for $7m. However, the private price guidance had offered it to buyers for $6.5m</p> <p dir="ltr">Now, The Agency real estate company has revised the price guide back down to $5m, after they failed to secure a buyer for the original price.</p> <p dir="ltr">The property, which is built on a hill offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside, with floor to ceiling windows in the main living room.</p> <p dir="ltr">The main bedroom has an ensuite bathroom and walk-in wardrobe, but the interior is not the only thing that’s worth boasting about.</p> <p dir="ltr">The luxurious estate has an in-ground pool, a tennis court and landscaped gardens which feature established trees and vegetable gardens designed by Michael Bligh.</p> <p dir="ltr">Other features include an outdoor dining area, an entertainment pavilion with a small fire pit, and a separate guest house complete with a loft bedroom and modern bathroom.</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image: Realestate.com.au, Getty</em></p> <p dir="ltr"> </p>

<p dir="ltr">Actors, producers, and creative souls from all over arrived at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre to strut their sparkle down the 2023 Oscars’ champagne carpet. </p> <p dir="ltr">The event, otherwise known as Hollywood’s night of nights, was always set to break records and draw attention from film fanatics across the globe - hopefully for all the right reasons - with the likes of <em>Everything Everywhere All at Once</em>, <em>Elvis</em>, <em>The Banshees of Inisherin</em>, and <em>Top Gun: Maverick </em>up for Best Picture. </p> <p dir="ltr">In fact, <em>Everything Everywhere All at Once </em>was nominated for 11 awards by itself, with <em>All Quiet on the Western Front</em> and <em>The Banshees of Inisherin </em>following right behind with an astounding nine nominations each. </p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Everything Everywhere All at Once </em>snagged a staggering seven awards in the end - most notably, the cast and crew secured the top honour of Best Picture for all of their hard work.</p> <p dir="ltr">In the Hollywood comeback of the decade, Best Actor went to Brendan Fraser for his part in<em> The Whale</em>, and Best Actress to the multi-talented Michelle Yeoh for her performance in <em>Everything Everywhere All at Once</em>, who took the opportunity to remind women everywhere that “you are never past your prime”. Michelle also made history with her win as both the first Best Actress nominee and winner to openly identify as Asian. </p> <p dir="ltr">Meanwhile, their supporting award counterparts went to <em>Everything Everywhere All at Once</em>’s Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis. </p> <p dir="ltr">There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when Ke Huy Quan accepted his award - and made history as the first Vietnam-born actor to ever do so. He began by thanking his 84-year-old mother, who was watching from the comfort of home, saying “my journey started on a boat. I spent a year in a refugee camp, and somehow I ended up here on Hollywood’s biggest stage. </p> <p dir="ltr">“They say stories like this only happen in the movies. I can’t believe it’s happening to me - this is the American dream.” </p> <p dir="ltr">Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert snagged Best Director for <em>Everything Everywhere All at Once</em>. Huge satellite BlueWalker-3 has now unfurled – and yes it’s very bright

<p>If you look at the sky near Jupiter just after sunset, you might notice a bright new star, travelling fast across the sky.</p> <p>This star is no planet or far-flung galaxy – it’s the largest commercial communications satellite in low-Earth orbit, the BlueWalker 3 satellite which has now unfurled its solar panels.</p> <p>The apartment-sized satellite is a prototype from American company AST SpaceMobile, whose goal is to create a space-based mobile broadband network. This is only one of multiple satellites planned for the SpaceMobile constellation – some of which will be even bigger than BlueWalker 3.</p> <p>Amateur astronomers have been reporting sightings of BlueWalker 3 over the last few weeks, many with an approximate brightness of 2<sup>nd</sup> or 3<sup>rd</sup> magnitude. Anthony Albanese accused of bullying female MP

<p dir="ltr">Anthony Albanese has been accused of bullying by Federal MP Michelle Landry after she "left Question Time in tears".</p> <p dir="ltr">The Prime Minister was called out by Ms Landry who said she was left “intimidated, bullied and treated with disrespect”. </p> <p dir="ltr">Ms Landry was questioning Mr Albanese if the government was going to delay $800m in Commonwealth funding to construct the Rockhampton Ring Rd in her electorate.</p> <p dir="ltr">The prime minister began his response but instead confused Yeppen Floodplain with Yeppoon before opposition leader, Peter Dutton interjected to correct him. </p> <p dir="ltr">The parliament got rowdy with Mr Albanese explaining that he was speaking about the Yeppen Floodplain with footage showing Ms Landry laughing. </p> <p dir="ltr">Mr Albanese then yelled at the other side of parliament saying, “Queenslander…says it all. I know about Queensland roads because the Bruce Hwy under John Howard’s government put $1.3 billion in, we put $6.7 billion in in half the time. </p> <p dir="ltr">“Including the Yeppen Floodplain, including planning the money for the Rockhampton Ring Rd.</p> <p dir="ltr">“But when the government changed in 2013 it went on the backburner. So you were in government for almost a decade and you haven’t dug a hole on the project.” </p> <p dir="ltr">Mr Albanese continued his response but after Question Time, Ms Landry accused the Prime Minister of bullying her after claiming she had to leave parliament. </p> <p dir="ltr">“I did not expect the response I received from him and his colleagues. The largest commercial communications array ever has just launched. Expect to see it – it’s huge and bright

<p>On the weekend SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket launched a giant satellite into space.</p> <p>Called BlueWalker 3, it’s a prototype by American company <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/ast-spacemobile-announces-bluewalker-3-123100434.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AST SpaceMobile</a>, which is to create a space-based mobile broadband network. This is only one of multiple satellites planned for the SpaceMobile constellation – <a href="https://space.skyrocket.de/doc_sdat/bluewalker-3.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">some even bigger than BlueWalker 3.</a></p> <p>“The reason why our satellite is large is because in order to communicate with a low-power, low internal strength phone, you just need a large antenna on one side with a lot of power, and so that’s a critical part of our infrastructure,” <a href="https://www.space.com/spacex-bluewalker-3-starlink-satellites-launch-success" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AST SpaceMobile Chief Strategy Officer Scott Wisniewski told Space.com.</a></p> <p>“We think that’s really important for communicating directly with regular handsets, with no change to the handset, with no extra burdens on the user.”</p> <p>Although this is potentially exciting for those who need that connectivity, astronomers are concerned about just how big and bright this satellite will be.</p> <p><a href="https://www.newscientist.com/article/2337336-huge-satellite-could-outshine-all-stars-and-planets-in-the-night-sky/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A New Scientist report</a> has even suggested that the satellite “could outshine all stars and planets in the night sky”.</p> <p>This is because the satellite is huge and reflective. Once the satellite unfurls – which it will do in the next few weeks – the antenna will measure 64m<sup>2</sup>.</p> <div class="newsletter-box"> <div id="wpcf7-f6-p213406-o1" class="wpcf7" dir="ltr" lang="en-US" role="form"> <form class="wpcf7-form mailchimp-ext-0.5.62 resetting spai-bg-prepared" action="/technology/bluewalker-launched-spacex-largest-satellite-astronomers/#wpcf7-f6-p213406-o1" method="post" novalidate="novalidate" data-status="resetting"> <p style="display: none !important;"><span class="wpcf7-form-control-wrap referer-page"><input class="wpcf7-form-control wpcf7-text referer-page" name="referer-page" type="hidden" value="http://Direct%20Visit" data-value="http://Direct%20Visit" aria-invalid="false" /></span></p> <p></form> </div> </div> <p>As <a href="https://www.universetoday.com/157410/bluewalker-3-satellite-launches-this-weekend-may-be-bright/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Universe Today notes</a> that’s in the same ballpark as NASA’s Echo-1 sphere launched in 1960. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Echo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">That ‘satelloon’ as</a> it was called, was also reflective, and was easy visible to the naked eye over most of Earth.</p> <p>With plans for a number of these huge satellites, ground based optical telescopes may struggle to image the night sky without disturbance.</p> <p>This is a continuation of worries from a few years ago, <a href="https://cosmosmagazine.com/space/spacex-astronomers-warn-over-musks-planned-satellite-constellation/">where SpaceX’s own satellite megaconstellation Starlink</a> began to affect astronomers’ work.</p> <p>The Falcon 9 rocket also included new Starlink satellites<a href="https://spaceflightnow.com/2022/05/13/spacex-passes-2500-satellites-launched-for-companys-starlink-network/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">, which brings the numbers over 2,200 active satellites</a> – which is about half the number of satellites SpaceX wants in orbit. It’s also worth pointing out that around <a href="https://dewesoft.com/daq/every-satellite-orbiting-earth-and-who-owns-them" target="_blank" rel="noopener">half of the satellites currently in orbit are Starlink’s. </a> </p> <p><a href="https://www.science.org/content/article/starlink-already-threatens-optical-astronomy-now-radio-astronomers-are-worried" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Radio astronomers</a> are also nervous. As <a href="https://www.sciencealert.com/starlink-is-being-an-absolute-nuisance-to-astronomers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Alan Duffy at the time told ScienceAlert</a> “a full constellation of Starlink satellites will likely mean the end of Earth-based microwave-radio telescopes able to scan the heavens for faint radio objects.”</p> <p>Currently, astronomers are building a group to tackle this problem called the ‘IAU Centre for the Protection of the Dark and Quiet Sky from Satellite Constellation Interference’. After a <a href="https://theconversation.com/equivalent-to-1-800-tonnes-of-tnt-what-we-now-know-about-the-meteor-that-lit-up-the-daytime-sky-above-new-zealand-186636">huge meteor exploded</a> above the sea near Wellington on July 7, creating a sonic boom that could be heard across the bottom of the South Island, a smaller fireball was captured two weeks later above Canterbury.</p> <p><a href="https://fireballs.nz/">Fireballs Aotearoa</a>, a collaboration between astronomers and citizen scientists which aims to recover freshly fallen meteorites, has received a lot of questions about these events. Bright meteors often signal the arrival of a chunk of asteroid, which can be anywhere between a few centimetres to a metre in diameter when it comes crashing through the atmosphere.</p> <p>Some of these asteroids contain nickel and iron and they hit the atmosphere at speeds of up to 60km per second. This releases an enormous amount of heat very quickly, and the vapourised iron and nickel radiate green light.</p> <p>But is this the same as the bright green of an aurora? For the most recent meteor, the answer is mainly no, but it’s actually not that simple.</p> <h2>The colours of a meteor trail</h2> <p>The green glow of the aurora is caused by oxygen ions in the upper atmosphere, created by collisions between atmospheric oxygen molecules and particles ejected by the sun.</p> <p>These oxygen ions recombine with electrons to produce oxygen atoms, but the electrons can persist in an excited state for several seconds. In an energy transition known as “forbidden” because it does not obey the usual quantum rules, they then radiate the auroral green light at 557nm wavelength.</p> <p>A meteor can also shine by this route, but only if it’s extremely fast. Very fast meteors heat up in the thin atmosphere above 100km where auroras form.</p> <p>If you want to see a green auroral wake from a meteor, watch out for the Perseid meteor shower, which has now started and will peak on August 13 in the southern hemisphere.</p> <p>Also arriving at about 60km per second, the Perseids are extremely fast bits of the <a href="https://www.space.com/33677-comet-swift-tuttle-perseid-meteor-shower-source.html">comet Swift-Tuttle</a>. Some Perseids trail a beautiful, glowing and distinctly green wake behind them, particularly at the start of their path.</p> <p>Once the Canterbury meteor hit on July 22, the capricious winds of the upper atmosphere twisted the gently glowing trail, resulting in a pale yellow glow towards the end (as seen in the GIF below, also recorded by Greg Price for an earlier meteor). This is caused by sodium atoms being continually excited in a catalytic reaction involving ozone.</p> <p><img src="https://cdn.theconversation.com/static_files/files/2231/The_22_July_meteor_-_persistent_train_-_credit_Greg_Price.gif?1659310010" width="100%" /></p> <h2>Are we being bombarded by meteors?</h2> <p>Yes and no. The arrival of big, booming green meteors and the dropping of meteorites isn’t rare in New Zealand, but it is rare to recover the rock. Fireballs Aotearoa is working to improve the recovery rate.</p> <p>In an average year, perhaps four meteorites hit New Zealand. A call out to all 'mum shamers'

<p>Michelle Branch – a popular celebrity mum is calling out ‘mum shamers’ after copping backlash for breastfeeding in public.</p> <p>On Tuesday, the singer took to Twitter after a trip to a playground left her “fuming”.</p> <p>“I just got shamed by another mother (who was holding her own young infant!) for nursing my six-week old baby on a bench at a playground while my toddler was playing,” she said.</p> <p>“She said I wasn’t ‘being modest’. I am in shock that this kind of judgement was coming from a fellow mum!”</p> <p>Fans were quick to weigh in on the situation, with one user saying “A woman did this to my bestie at the Grammy Museum 10 years ago and I’m still mad about it.”</p> <p>Michelle responded, “I was in shock, so I didn’t say anything back. Meghan Markle’s casting plan falls through

Michelle Pfeiffer flips luxe home for multi-million profit

Olympic gold medallist's son dead at 26

“One silver lining”: Lisa Wilkinson offers glimmer of a bright side

<p>Michelle Pfeiffer is spending quality time with her daughter, Claudia Rose.</p> <p>The 63-year-old Scarface actress shared a rare photo with the 28-year-old, before heading out "on the town".</p> <p>"Out on the town with my girl," Pfeiffer captioned her post.</p> <p>The star adopted Claudia when she was a newborn, just months before marrying producer David E. Kelly.</p> <p>Pfeiffer has been notoriously private about her family life and kept her kids out of the public eye.</p> <p>In an interview with Good Housekeeping in 2007, she praised her daughter</p> <p>"Boy, there's nothing typical about my girl," she said at the time. "She's a force to be reckoned with, and an amazing human being. <div class="post_body_wrapper"> <div class="post_body"> <div class="body_text redactor-styles redactor-in"> <p>Former first lady Michelle Obama has urged Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to reconcile with the British royal family after the shocking Oprah tell-all interview last week.</p> <p>“My hope is that, when I think about what they’re going through, I think about the importance of family, and I just pray that there is forgiveness, and there is clarity and love and resolve at some point in time,” Obama told<span> </span><a rel="noopener" href="https://www.accessonline.com/articles/michelle-obama-reacts-to-meghan-markle-prince-harrys-oprah-interview-i-just-pray-that-there-is-forgiveness" target="_blank">Access Hollywood</a>.</p> <p>“Because there’s nothing more important than family,” Obama said.</p> <p>Obama's statement comes after Meghan claimed that Prince Harry told her about a conversation between a family member and himself where there were "concerns" over Archie's skin tone when he was born.</p> <p>"There was a conversation with Harry about [Archie's skin colour] what that would mean," she said.</p> <p>"I think that would be very damaging to them... but those were conversations the family had with him. It was really hard to see those as compartmentalised conversations."</p> <p>Buckingham Palace quickly released a statement after the allegations were made in the interview on behalf of the Queen.</p> <p>The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan," the statement reads.</p> <p>"The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.</p> <p>"Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members."</p> </div> </div> </div>
